One adjective that comes to mind when I think of how to describe this book is "elegiac." Karen Thompson Walker combines two types of novels--a coming of age story and an apocalyptic scenario--and the result is love letter to life and the world. This is the story of Julia, a middle school girl teetering on the edge of teenagerdom with all the changes and drama that entails, whose life is interrupted by a strange "natural" disaster. The earth's rotation has begun to slow and though scientists have ...more

I really enjoyed this book. There are parts that I wasn't CRAZY about and there are certain aspects that you have to be willing to ignore, but otherwise, it is a great coming of age story. http://youtu.be/8zUW2iD1Ufo ...more

The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker was the December selection for the Partners and Professors book club. I did not know much about the book, but had seen the name on several lists for good reads. The best description I have came from a fellow book clubber who said that the book is both a coming of age and an end of the world story. Reminds me a bit of the Life As We Knew It (Last Survivors, #1) by Susan Beth Pfeffer series. This time, not the moon going out of its orbit, but the Earth is slowing down its rotation. Days became longer and more depressing. I love dystopia/post apocalyptic books, because it made me realized how lucky we are living in a normal world. The heroine in this book, Julia, is very likable - typical bookworm without being too cliche. And the ending, oh how heart breaking. Recommended book. And it's a debut! ...more

Apparently this review did not actually save, which stinks because as I recall I actually wrote a good review for once. In any case, I quite enjoyed this. The basic conceit is that the Earth's rotation starts to slow, and so the days and nights get longer. The protagonist is a young teenage girl, and so we experience this change through her point of view, and it is intertwined with her own sort of normal teenage experiences. I quite enjoyed this - it was a very absorbing read. ...more
