This gets more like two and a half stars. I feel like Walker wanted to write two books. One is a slow-paced coming-of-age story, featuring a twelve-year-old girl and her struggles with friends and school as she watches her parents' relationship start to fall apart. The other is a science fiction exploration of a big "what if" - what if the rotation of our earth started slowing gradually and days and nights became longer and longer? Shelves: ya, family, dystopian
So beautifully written and lyrical and just gorgeous. It's on the dystopian spectrum, but it doesn't have the same "feel" that so many of those books have. It was more like a report on real life, with just one tinge of weirdness. It felt believable and not too far from reality, I guess. But either way, there are so many phrases that just linger in my head, so many great ideas. SO worth reading. ...more

Reminds me a bit of the Life As We Knew It (Last Survivors, #1) by Susan Beth Pfeffer series. This time, not the moon going out of its orbit, but the Earth is slowing down its rotation. Days became longer and more depressing. I love dystopia/post apocalyptic books, because it made me realized how lucky we are living in a normal world. The heroine in this book, Julia, is very likable - typical bookworm without being too cliche. And the ending, oh how heart breaking. Recommended book. And it's a debut! ...more

This is one story that I didn't want to end. The premise is that one day the slowing starts, which means that the 24 hour day keeps getting longer and longer. Daylight and darkness don't coincide in regular time. People start dividing into clock-time and real-time followers.
