I have to remind myself that "I liked Ready Player One better" does not equal "I didn't like this book.

Now pardon me while I go about downloading that mixtape...

Fun to read, but lots of clunky writing. I generally can forgive that with scifi, as long as the world-building is awesome. Armada's world-building was a bit subpar. Everything was too easy, too unlikely. Which is too bad, because the premise is really great. Anyway, this book does not match up to the joy of Ready Player One. But it's good fun anyway, and I'll probably read his next book just to make sure I don't miss out. ...more

As for the plot, it is quite predictable especially if you are familiar with the genre. A few things that are clearly intended by shockers aren't. I have a hard time deciding if it would be different if I wasn't so fam

I wanted to love it... But it was slow to get started and then wrapped up way too fast. It was alright but I loved Ready Player One so much that I was expecting more.

Cline presents us with another ode to 80s culture, particularly video gaming and sci-fi movies, with more than a nod to MMORPGs. Even if you don't love these things, you might still like this book about video gamers saving the world. You might also get tired of the huge info dumps and extreme amounts of exposition. On the other hand, even if you DO love gaming and sci-fi, you might find the whole book derivative. Or you might love it and see all of the references as an homage, not just a replay. ...more

A fun YA save-the-world-from aliens adventure. It's not the singularly immersive and wonderful experience that Ready Player One was -- it has a lot less crossover appeal for non-YA fans and readers who don't care about video games...

... which isn't to say it's not a fun book for anyone, because it is -- it's just not as thoroughly fantastic as Cline's first novel. And I'm not the target audience for either one (95% of the gamer-geek references go directly over my head at the speed of an alien st
