**Sort of spolierish**

I really liked it more like 3.5 stars. Oh well. The first half of the book I blew through like the first two. Loved it. Then it started getting slower. Then I got really excited and happy when...someone...died. Finally, the little shit. But then I was kinda bored again, and wasn't too thrilled with the surprise reappearance of someone else. But it was still good, just not AS good as the first two.

Just reread this and everything seemed new to me so I must have skimmed it the first time even though it took longer to read in 2012 than it did this time.

I place SoS in my list of the top 10 works of fiction that I've ever read. The world building and character development is exquisite. With the exception of a couple of dry sections, most of the 1100 pages had me hanging on every word. I really wish the TV show would have stayed closer to the text for seasons 3 and 4 as they missed out on some real gems. I thought this first half of this book was not as good as the first two, with several chapters focusing on "will they or won't they" situations between various couples (I use that term very loosely in some cases). The strong back half made up for this, however. I appreciated how several characters' story lines converged, so that the action was not so broken up. Some of my early predictions have come to pass, or seem to have been set up to come to pass in future volumes. There were also two death ...more

I started this third installment in the Game of Thrones saga more than a month ago but at 1100 pages, this one took a bit to finish. It's full of twists and turns and a lot of blood and death but it's also the work of a solid storyteller--who makes you care about characters but isn't afraid to kill them off. Like the first book in the series, it ends with a cliffhanger worthy of an HBO series. The book and the series are totally intertwined in my mind (I see Peter Dinklage, etc. in my head as I ...more

I liked the political machinations and the Starks and the Lannisters. I hated the narrator's voicing of some of the characters in Mereen and had to skip those parts. ...more
