I really liked it more like 3.5 stars. Oh well. The first half of the book I blew through like the first two. Loved it. Then it started getting slower. I place SoS in my list of the top 10 works of fiction that I've ever read. The world building and character development is exquisite. With the exception of a couple of dry sections, most of the 1100 pages had me hanging on every word. I really wish the TV show would have stayed closer to the text for seasons 3 and 4 as they missed out on some real gems. And I absolutely loved hearing Meera's telling of the "Knight of the laughing tree". Can't wait to finish the series.

I thought this first half of this book was not as good as the first two, with several chapters focusing on "will they or won't they" situations between various couples (I use that term very loosely in some cases). The strong back half made up for this, however. I appreciated how several characters' story lines converged, so that the action was not so broken up. I started this third installment in the Game of Thrones saga more than a month ago but at 1100 pages, this one took a bit to finish. It's full of twists and turns and a lot of blood and death but it's also the work of a solid storyteller--who makes you care about characters but isn't afraid to kill them off. I liked the political machinations and the Starks and the Lannisters. I hated the narrator's voicing of some of the characters in Mereen and had to skip those parts.
