This has been one of the most fun books I've read in a long time. Fun in the sense that I really enjoyed myself as I was reading.
I enjoyed the way the book took advantage of different media, such as websites and magazine articles, to advance the plot and supply background exposition. I would say 3.5 stars. Interesting plot, and very gripping. Kept my attention, which has been a hard job for books lately. BUT Geez, Pessl, cool it with the italics. I felt like I was reading a long form Ellen Barshevsky comment. Also, the ending. I think there can be value in a book that leaves questions unanswered - I thought the ending of Special Topics in Calamity Physics was a great example of this. I dunno, I just couldn't do it. I didn't totally love Special Topics and I think this had some of the same problems.

After like a million page of me going "why are you reminding me about this plot point?" and "why are you not done yet?", I actually liked the ending a lot. But this was written in such a heavy handed way with lots of emphasis italics that it felt dumbed down and condescending to the audience. The magic bits were cool. The thriller bits were less so. I couldn't see the extras because I was reading on a regular old Kindle.
