an emotional journey, complete with the incredible horrors of war, and the life that must be lived after it. while it can be considered a love story, I didn't realize it until the second section.

I was really excited to read this book - I'm a sucker for historical fiction and it was a time I knew nearly nothing about (the building of the doomed Thai-Burma railway using POW labor). However, this book was disappointing. The writing was a little herky-jerky/stream of consciousness, especially confusing at the beginning when you're trying to get a passing familiarity with the main characters. This was a heartbreaking book; in parts very hard to read. Especially in the center section, which focuses on the prisoners' experience in the slave camps, I found myself counting the pages and willing myself to read through the depictions of the unspeakable brutality inflicted on the men.
