Why did I wait so long to read this?!?! I enjoyed this so much that I now miss the characters. Vivid detail and interesting characters really lend themselves to the story.

So much wrong with this book.

It is stuffed with unnecessary words ("The Eighties was a long decade. Ten whole years."). It suffers from a shocking lack of imagination--the world of 2044 lacks any notable technological developments, and mostly contains slightly improved VR gear, slightly increased storage (zettabytes!), and slightly improved WiFi signals (but, don't worry, passages of the book are still dedicated to the scintillating topic of someone attempting to connect to WiFi). In search of the elusive 3.5 star. I busted through this in no time once I got into the contest - read like a really fun YA novel that kept me turning pages. Given the devastation of the larger world and the potential emotional impact of what's going on, I was surprised at how little depth and introspection was explored here. It was totally a good time, though. ...more

I had fairly low expectations for this book, but I thought Cline did a great job with the tone and balance, especially for a debut novel. It's so easy to set a book in the disintegrating future and frame it as a dire warning, but Cline keeps everything light and (relatively) realistic. The action is somewhat predictable, but the characters are endearing and the bad guys are super bad. While I'd be happy never to have to read such a glowing tribute to the 80s again, this was a very fun read. ...more

nope. too much long explanations of 80s pop culture. the main characters were not super likable and were a bit too self congratulatory about their nerd. Also, racist Japanese stereotypes.

Fun, but I think it helps that I was familiar with a lot of the references (though not all); sometimes a little too proud of its own cleverness. I didn't find the romance between Parzival and Art3mis that compelling, and some of the challenges felt like they were a little too easily overcome. I probably would've loved this book more in middle school. ...more

It is so very rare that I read a book which has had a lot of hype and come out liking it.

I didn't this time either. I LOVED IT.

This is one of the best books I have read in the past five years, if not the best one. There really isn't any kind of summary I want to do, mainly because you really need to read this book.
