I'm not, and will likely never be, a gamer. However that did not keep me from loving this book (read it in about a day, starting late afternoon on a flight to Dallas and finished up at the hotel-I just couldn't stay away from it!). I'm guessing most children of the 80s will find something great here. It's part science-fiction, part puzzle mystery (a genre I adore and don't see nearly enough of), part love story, part pop-culture treatise and all absolutely fun and wonderful. Kudos to the author

This book gets deep into 1980s throwbacks with hardly ever a mention of a single woman or person of color that was part of American pop culture at the time. MADONNA. WHITNEY HOUSTON. MICHAEL JACKSON. LIONEL RITCHIE. Hello? At times, I felt like I was being trolled by this goddamned book.
Other than that...fun little adventure story! Ha ! The secondary characters do have some diversity, though the one woman who is talked about at length is given the standard HOT CHICK video game/comic book treatme ...more

I started listening to Ready Player One as an audiobook in the car during my commute. But inevitably I would get to work, and sit in the car for a few minutes, waiting for a good spot to quit listening. Finding a good stopping point was difficult. Also, the long break from getting out of the car in the afternoon all the way to the next morning was killing me, so I took the actual book out of the library so I could keep reading. This isn't a typical YA dystopia novel, and there are times when the

Nostalgia. Adventure. Insight. This book initially took me some time to get into. Although I was a child of the 80's, I wasn't much of a gamer. However, the cultural references did filter through to me.
It is the underdog adventure story that I love about this book, and I will be recommending it to both my students and friends, and to anyone with a fondness for 80's pop culture. I've read a lot of sci fi and can also appreciate the stark reality Cline presents us with our own online obsession. W ...more

Finally finished this audiobook today. I can't believe it took me so long to pick it up! I think part of my initial hesitation is because I'm not a video game person, and the whole story is essentially about one giant video game. But once you get past that (if you're like me, and need to), it's also really fun and entertaining. I think I may have enjoyed it on audio more than I might have if I'd read it. I mean, it helped that I was sort of a captive listener, being in the car and all. This is t

This was a fantastic coaster ride!!! I am so sorry I waited so long to read this book. The main character, Wade, is very likable. His reactions and interactions with the other characters are brought to us through a fantastically presented conversational writing style that makes you feel like you are part of this world. There is just the right amount of detailed description throughout the book to pull you into the virtual reality world of OASIS where much of this story takes place. If you grew up
