Have you ever found a book that everyone seems to LOOOOOVE and think is amazing. And then you read it and you're like, "Okay. I understand why people like it. But how did no reviews mention all the really harmful crap in this book?" Yeah, that's me and Ready Player One by Cline Ernest, which I expected to love. And I did enjoy a lot of things about it. But the things I did not like, I loathed because they were super harmful and unfortunately, also super common.

I'm not, and will likely never be, a gamer. However that did not keep me from loving this book (read it in about a day, starting late afternoon on a flight to Dallas and finished up at the hotel-I just couldn't stay away from it!). I'm guessing most children of the 80s will find something great here. It's part science-fiction, part puzzle mystery (a genre I adore and don't see nearly enough of), part love story, part pop-culture treatise and all absolutely fun and wonderful. Kudos to the author

4.5 ⭐️! So fun. I was pretty sure I was going to love this, and I did. 80's references galore, dystopia, cool tech and a bit of romance? It's like it was written with me in mind!
Through the latter third of the book, I couldn't help but notice the idea of "CONVENIENT!" flash across my brain (often!) but the story was so fun and fast-moving that I just ignored that part of my brain and decided to enjoy the ride. This is going to be a great movie - it reads just like one.

three and a half? i couldn't quite justify giving this four stars, because i felt like the author was getting bogged down in explaining almost every little in-joke. also, cline is kind of preachy when talking about how his characters bond without ever meeting in real life. while i get his point, i feel like he hits it too hard.
while the subject matter was fun, i can't really see myself getting much out of this on a second read. on a book-nerd level, it's maybe how i feel about the tuesday next b ...more

An unbelievably fun, fun 80s geekfest/mystery/cyperpunk adventure. Do you like Blade Runner? Atari? Video arcades? 80s movies? John Hughes? Definitely, Ready Player One is for you. I would advise listening to the audio edition read by the fabulous Wil Wheaton - Wade, the narrator, gets a little annoying in the beginning but Wheaton's voice gets you through it.

Nostalgia. Adventure. Insight. This book initially took me some time to get into. Although I was a child of the 80's, I wasn't much of a gamer. However, the cultural references did filter through to me.
It is the underdog adventure story that I love about this book, and I will be recommending it to both my students and friends, and to anyone with a fondness for 80's pop culture. I've read a lot of sci fi and can also appreciate the stark reality Cline presents us with our own online obsession. W ...more

When this book was selected for book club and I heard the description, my first thought was, "How boring." Reading numerous mixed reviews on it merely reinforced my hesitation to read it.
Then I bit the bullet, started reading it, and basically didn't stop until I was finished. I blew through this one in a few hours, stopping only to sleep and, like, take care of my daughter.

An entertaining read, especially if you're into video games and 80s pop culture. Started out a little slow because so much set up was required to bring the reader up to speed on the world (OASIS) that most of the book took place in. Got a little predictable towards the end too, but I'm always a sucker for the happy ending.

This was a fantastic coaster ride!!! I am so sorry I waited so long to read this book. The main character, Wade, is very likable. His reactions and interactions with the other characters are brought to us through a fantastically presented conversational writing style that makes you feel like you are part of this world. There is just the right amount of detailed description throughout the book to pull you into the virtual reality world of OASIS where much of this story takes place. If you grew up

it took me a long time to get into this but then once the first gate was opened all bets were off. I mean literally a year i tried reading this and i would get a couple pages in and be like "what is all the hype about?" but then i read it and i understood. its really good... pretty good... Cline is a good writer at least, i dont know see i still feel like so so about it but i do think it deserves its 4 stars. its definitely a book that you can't talk about too much without giving too much away

I'm not a video game player at all. But despite that I found this story quite fun to read.
