Ta-Nehisi Coates writes lyrical, powerful essays in the form of letters to his teenage son about the harsh realities of being a black boy and a black man in the United States. The writing is evocative enough to empower young people of color while confronting white people with the realities of the systematic racism and historical tyranny that have led to our continued present-day struggles with racial disparity and police brutality.

This small (160-page / 3 audio disk) book is extraordinary. Written as a letter to the author's son, it delves into the historical and painfully contemporary impact of the construct of race and what that means for the life of a 15-yo black boy who has just witnessed the disastrous year of Trayvon Martin's murder at the hands of a white vigilante on the news. It is part autobiography, part history, part playbook, part manifesto of struggle.

Coates's musing letter to his son is blunt, bleak, and beautifully written.

In this very short book Coates shares his thoughts on "the black body" and "the struggle" with "the dreamers" AKA "the people who think they are white" (the latter being a phrase borrowed and acknowledged, I believe, from James Baldwin). These are all powerful ideas woven throughout his meditation on their place in a world tainted by racism and exploitation.
