I have not been much of a short story person, but I am trying to broaden my reading horizons. I picked his book up and I have to say I didn't get most of the stories. There were three where I was able to pick up what I think she as getting to. Most of them, however, I just didn't get. I am not sure if there is a way to read short stories that is different from novels or what. I won't be giving up on trying short stories, but I think this author is not for me. ...more

I didn't realize when I checked this out that I had already read so many of the stories in it -- I recognized at least three of them, and so I skipped them. I can't decide how much I like Alice Munro, and I sort of feel that I should like her more than I do. There is something about her stories (at least the ones I have read) that is very dark and depressing, though it's not overt. You almost have a sense of what's going to happen before it does, and you're dreading getting there. I'm not sure i ...more

While I have enjoyed Alice Munro's short stories in the past, this collection left little impression on me. I would recommend reading "Fiction" which was very good, but most of the other stories were forgettable or tediously sordid. ...more
