I have to say I’m a bit in awe of Kate Atkinson’s writing prowess. This novel sucked me in, gave me a dose of existential angst, made me laugh, and then made me cry. Atkinson plays a lot with form here, just as she did in Life after Life, but it works because the characters are just so wonderfully and frustratingly real.

In Life after Life, Atkinson tells the story of Ursula Todd who dies and is reborn numerous times in the novel as she works her way toward and through World War II. It’s like Gro

I'm abandoning this book after reading around 100 pages or so. The writing, of course, isn't the problem. What I can't do right now it read about Teddy's sad life after Life After Life and seeing how beloved he was in that book. I found both Teddy's life and his daughter's life terribly depressing, so I'm going to give this book a pass. Perhaps I'll eventually be in the mood to return to it and give it another try. ...more

Again, brilliant! I loved revisiting the Todd family and this time focusing on Teddy. The ending amazed me. The what ifs and what if nots and manipulation of history is such a wonderful thing Atkinson incorporates into these books. Loved it!

Atkinson is a fine, fine writer. Companion to,Life After Life, different, but also a worthy companion. 4 stars because I liked Life after Life a smudge better, but I'm a girl, and Viola is so awful, and Nancy is awful too, in her own way - it's ultimately a much more dispiriting book than Life After Life. ...more

Perfection. Made me go to pieces on a plane but I could read 100 books about the Todds, actually I could read 100 books by Kate Atkinson.

I got a little less than a quarter of the way into this and then decided to stop. I just was not interested in the main character that much, and the story was really plodding along. Maybe it gets better further in, but I just didn't feel compelled to keep going. ...more
