Second review (12/19/24) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐:
I think I just wasn't prepared for how SILLY this series would be the first time I read this. I seemed to expect it to be a proper mystery. On this re-read (and it's a good think I decided to re-read it since I'd forgotten nearly ALL of it), after having read the full Etiquette & Espionage series, I was in the proper mindset and I enjoyed this a lot more.

The first paragraph couldn't be more charming.

I believe this would be something Julia Quinn would write if she dwelled in paranormal romance with a little (very little actually) steampunk twist. I really loved it mostly because it made me laugh and has a handful of great, even if at sometimes outrageous, characters. Alexia is a strong-willed spinster, Lord Maccon a ill-mannered Alpha werewolf, and Lord Akeldama is a dandy vampire, but together with Professor Lyall, Floote and Ivy, provide a very colourful ensemble worth following around.

Huh. For some reason, I had it in my head that this was YA, but it's not, just mass market semi-romance. She writes in the clever kooky fangirl style I normally enjoy (as she is a fangirl, demonstrated during her YALSA speech this year), but the weird POV switches were disorienting, and the odd way she shifts between calling her heroine Alexia and Miss Tarabotti from paragraph to paragraph was very distracting, too.

Absolutely hilarious. I can't wait to read more about Alexia's adventurers and interferences with Woolsey Castle.

This was an odd book. It starts slow, gets speedy, slows down. At the end of the book I now understand the pacing. Ms. Carriger wants to show you the world she's created in all it's splendor and lumps and so forth. Throwaway lines become fascinating ideas and you want her to expand on them.

A very campy mix of light steampunk and slighty smutty romance--P.G. Wodehouse meets Jane Austen in Bridget Jones form. The setting and characters are what make this one fun--a Victorian England filled with vampires and werewolves along with normal humans. This one isn't for everyone, but it sure tickled my fancy.

This book took a while to connect for me. Up until about page 100 or so I would have given it 2 stars and called it "just ok" but once the characters started behaving as characters (and more importantly, interacting) the whole thing picked up and by the end I was enjoying myself much more. The humor of the book was hit and miss for me. When our Alpha werewolf is described as pacing about "looking vaguely magnificent" I was charmed but when introduced to characters named "Squire Loontwill" or "La
