This was not what I expected! I had picked up and ready a page or two awhile back and liked the element of keeping what sparks joy - but it helped more in the realm of acquiring new things.
Seems this book is all over the place so I wanted to see what other tidbits I could learn.
In terms of cleaning and storing there were bits that were helpful, but Kondo is so rigid in her method (rules), I had a hard time not getting annoyed. She says many times that "no one misses things," but I have missed s ...more

I feel like I need to apologize to my mother for giving her this as a gift prior to me reading it. Holy shit was this one of the most horrific books I have ever read. Honestly, I think Kondo is trying to normalize her issues that sound very compulsive by encouraging others to join her. No thank you. First impression: this woman is a Froot Loop.
Second impression: there is no way in hell I'm emptying my purse every evening.
Third impression: is some of this getting lost in translation?
Final impression: the off-putting superlatives (this book is magic, it will clear your skin, flatten your tummy, and bring brightness to your eyes!) become sweet somehow, and there are some truly fantastic ideas in this beautiful little book. On the other hand, it's very repetitive and some of her techniques don't seem to be relevant to my life. I'm not a skimmer, but the last 20 pages or so of this book were definitely skimmed over/flipped through. ...more

Clearly, Kondo is a little more invested in folding than I could ever be, but she really knows how to get to the heart of the matter: she doesn't care what you have, just that you have only what you need. (which is, as we know, not very much at all.)

I found this incredibly charming, I don't know why. The tone is very lovely and gentle.
