This book is like nothing I have ever read. Masterpiece. Demanded rereading because of the beauty of a line, a passage, a moment.

Review coming soon...

UPDATE: I'm finally getting around to writing a review of this book I read on my Christmas vacation. It's a really good magic realism YA novel with an unusual set of romances. I love magic realism and I don't see as much of it as I'd like in bestseller YA novels - they seem to all be realistic fiction or fantasy. I loved the focus, in this novel, on bodyshaming, slut shaming, and toxic masculinity, all of which are countered in subtle, beautiful, and sensitive ways. My one c

4.5 stars but I'm rounding up to 5 because I deeply loved the characters and setting. Rural Illinois, YA, part fantasy and part not, part mystery with a bit of young romance, and strong characters - so, so good. I loved this book. And am not alone -- I was carrying it as I was walking through an airport, and a woman nudged her friend and said, "She's reading 'Bone Gap!'" And another woman said, "I heard that was good!" I assured her that yes, yes it was. And now I'm telling you all the same. ...more

Hokey and just plain confusing at times, but not horrible. I could have done without so much magic, or at least some reason for its presence in the story. The relationships and reflections on love save it, I guess.

As much as I love YA, I still can't do magical realism. I'm sure this is a lovely book for those who enjoy the genre. I was just a little cranky that this was billed as a kidnapping story and wasn't that at all. ...more

I have to admit that the beginning of this book had me wondering if I was going to enjoy it. It definitely has some magic, which was slightly unexpected, but I really ended up loving this book.

While I liked the magical realism aspect well enough, I felt that the story could have been stronger without it. Decent narration. Overall great read.

Very good book, but it had flaws. It won the Printz anyway.
