Not my favorite of Austen’s but glad I read it. It started off slow by picked up towards the end.
It's clear this was an early work, although I wasn't aware of that fact until I finished it. But I found it witty enough, just very rushed at the end

I really enjoyed this more than I had expected! It was funny and had a great narrative drive. I loved the satire on mystery and romance.
so glad I read this again after learning more about Jane Austen (thank you Novel Pairings ladies!) ... knowing this is a satire, with a snarky take on the gothic romance of the day made all the difference. adding another star!
from my first read in 2010: my least favorite of the five jane austen novels I've read (all except for mansfield park). this one just seemed "young". of course the story had the happy ending that I love, but too much was contrived about the story. still, I'm glad I read it. ...more
