I'm not entirely sure how to write a review for this book! I've never read King Lear, but based on the author's note (and the Sparknote summary I read!), I'm not sure it's necessary. Moore, in the author's note at the end of the novel, admits to borrowing from a whole host of Shakespeare's work. A ghost like Hamlet, a trio of witches borrowed from Macbeth, the slapstick and mistaken identity of nearly every comedy. I can appreciate the lengths Moore went to in order to tell the story; the man ha ...more

Such a filthy, hilarious book. I absolutely loved this irreverent retelling of King Lear with a bit of Macbeth smashed in for good effect. I am curious about The Serpent of Venice given the way this ended. ...more

Fool is the story of King Lear, told in humorous fashion by Lear's fool (jester,) a small dude named Pocket (I HATED that name) who says "Fuckstockings" a lot. And who is not as funny to me as he is to the author.

I . . . did not like this book at all. I recognized where all of the jokes were (and practically every other sentence was a punchline, or a pun, or even alliterative) but I didn't laugh out loud once. Not ONCE! I laughed out loud at Jane Austen for Chrissakes.

Like Cliff Notes for King Lear, but includes the shagging that Shakespeare had inexplicably Bowdlerized from his own tragedy.

"Fool" is a retelling of King Lear, through the eyes of the king's fool. It is the quintessential madcap romp, in which the characters just barely skate by the edge of being self-aware. If you can imagine the play turned into a comedy and find yourself intrigued, then I encourage you to pick this up. It's bawdy, completely ridiculous and wonderful fun. Quite funny, and quite enjoyable. ...more

Giving this one a second chance.

I had a better impression of this humorous novel the second time around. Bawdy rather than gross or erotic, and occasionally I smiled at the Fool's antics.

Funny book for anyone who likes British humor, lots of swearing and sex and Shakespeare being all twisted around.
