I'm not sure if it was my fault or the book's fault that I got so bored and distracted while trying to read this, and ended up being so disappointed in it. The magical worldbuilding was intriguing, and the relationship that built between Ceony and Magician Thane was appealing. The romantic angle felt subtle at first, and their growing relationship was charming. The initial world building was good. The magic tied to different categories of material seemed novel. The shift later to graphic descriptions of wandering through someones heart (literally and figuratively).

I really loved the Spellbreaker/Spellmaker books, so I was excited to jump into another Holmberg series. This book was a huge letdown to me. Nothing happens, and there's a weird... romance? I have no idea what word to use for a girl who falls in love with an unconscious man from inside his own heart. *insert shrug emoji* ...more

Interesting magic system
