What Members Thought
I love Toni Morrison's writing, especially Sula and Beloved, and it was hard to read this without comparing it to her earlier, more complex work. Jazz was a short novel, too, but it felt fully imagined. God Help the Child is short in a way that feels incomplete: sketchy, underdeveloped, and too reliant on long blocks of narrative explanation, rather than letting the characters move the story. I've been going back and forth in my mind (and on here a few times) between a rating of 3 and 4 stars for this book. I finally settled on 4 stars -- such a slim book that has taken up so much time and thought certainly deserves that. I just wanted more from this as I was reading it -- but that last line, those last four words, in the context of the whole book, made it for me. That is amazing talent.
