Explicitly confronting the reality of how murder happens in America is the first step toward deciding that it is not acceptable, and that for too long black men have lived inadequately protected by the laws of their own country.
Wow Jill Leovy can write!! This book had me so sucked in, and even though I was getting angrier and angrier and sadder and sadder at what I was reading, I didn't want to stop reading. I am blown away.

I liked this book. I enjoy narrative non-fiction for the most part. My takeaway though is that I don't know how much of the story was based on the experiences of the victims and their families vs. the police. There was a great deal of emphasis placed on the fact that black men in America receive a horrible amount of mistreatment from our society (police, institutions, etc.) but I felt that this book focused a bit too much on a couple of the homicide detectives. Probably 4.5. Really well done and with an interesting premise that the wrong kind of policing exacerbates homicide problems in inner city neighborhoods. Current policing in LA is "both oppressive and inadequate" because it can't protect black men.
