Mercedes Athena Thompson has always been an outsider. Half Native and Half white she never really fit into either world, but more so than that she is a shifter, a coyote raised by wolves. Mercy embraces this isolated identity though, working as a mechanic and living on the outskirts of town. She moved away from the Pack and lives independently a very rare thing indeed. What a great, great book! I loved this from start to finish, even if I was confused in the beginning, what with all the species and their codes of conduct and all. Mercy was a very put together character; not too weak and not too strong to be unbelievable. While I do wish that authors in this genre would quit with the multiple love interests, Patricia Briggs managed it quite well, and I look forward to those developments (although I'm partial to Adam myself :P). I really liked this one. Like everyone says, ignore the cover and give it a chance. I've been reading a lot of urban fantasy lately and I was trying to figure out why this one was so much better. It's the writing. Briggs is great at developing her characters. Recommended.
