I liked this book. I liked it a lot. I won't pretend it was the most brilliant writing ever, but it felt very solid to me. Lots of clearly defined characters, and a well-developed/developing world in which the books are set. in some ways it's awfully parallel to Sookie Stackhouse--a differently gifted female uses her gifts to mingle, often successfully, with werewolves, vampires, and other "fae". But I like Mercy a lot more. She's tough. no nonsense. someone I'd be more likely to like as a real ...more

A great diversion - lots of setting up for a long series with intricate relationships, a well-built world, and tons of detailed mythology. Mercy is a fun, snarky, strong character and I enjoyed the politics between the different groups and the hierarchies within them. I could do without the love triangle vet that’s a small quibble. The “why” for everything that happened was very convoluted and seemed a little far-fetched, but that didn’t stop me from reading this in one day and really enjoying i ...more

I didn’t know much about this series when I started this book, other than a few mentions here and there about it being good. It definitely lived up to the good things I’ve heard.

The world Briggs has built is a little bit different than the typical urban fantasy/paranormal universe. There’s vampires and werewolves, but there is also a whole class of fae that includes creatures other than faeries. There’s goblins and all sorts of "lesser" fae, and then there’s Mercy, who is a skinwalker. She’s sor

I picked this book up only b/c the main character is female and has a lot of tattoos, b/c I don't see that often in popular fiction. I was startled at how many progressive attitudes this book included, as well. Mercy Thompson is a person of color, being half Native American, which I don't encounter often. There is also a homosexual werewolf, enabling the author to discuss homophobia in contemporary society. She also discusses gender inequality. I will definitely continue with this series. ...more

This book was exactly what I needed to snap a reading funk. It has fun characters, an interesting world that links together all of your favorite supernatural creatures, and a butt-kicking female protagonist. While I could do without the love triangle aspect, everything else here was great for me. Recommended, particularly if you are into urban fantasy.

What a great, great book! I loved this from start to finish, even if I was confused in the beginning, what with all the species and their codes of conduct and all. Mercy was a very put together character; not too weak and not too strong to be unbelievable. While I do wish that authors in this genre would quit with the multiple love interests, Patricia Briggs managed it quite well, and I look forward to those developments (although I'm partial to Adam myself :P). I've already ordered Blood Bound ...more

Fun, really quick read. The storyline reminded me of the first book in Kelly Armstrong's "Women of the Otherworld" series, at least in the beginning. I would have liked both the storyline and the characters to be a little more developed (it was such a short book there was definitely room for both of those), but it was a good introduction to the world and the characters, and I'm looking forward to seeing where the series goes. ...more
