Pretty much a masterclass in how to tell a sprawling, complicated political story through a familiar plot --- in this case, a love triangle.

This was way better than I was expecting. I read Graham Greene in high school and hated it. Apparently, I was not in the right place for American Literature in high school.

I feel like I can't say much without giving it away but this book is chilling. Fowler is a very interesting character who is extremely calculating. The book gives a good portrait of the situation in Vietnam in the 1950s with fighting and imminent American involvement. I also liked reading it after I had been to Saigon since I could often picture the places that were being discussed. I would recommend it to anyone though, it explores the age old emotions of love and jealousy.
