Read Harder Reading Challenge Item: A Book of Essays
I have never read any of Ann Patchett's novels, nor her memoir, and I don't know whether I ever will. I knew virtually nothing about her, but I read in a review that this book contained essays about writing and marriage, and I was like, "OK, I'm in!"
Although this is the first of her work I've ever read, it's clear that she's one of those people who is a good writer because she is a close observer. I enjoyed seeing the world given meaning and sh ...more

This collection of essays is culled from Ann Patchett's work that's been previously published in magazines, etc. It's a nice look into the writer's life and I would particularly recommend it for fans of Patchett's novels. The essays cover many different subjects including her experience in her MFA program (and whether she'd recommend one for you), taking the qualifying exams (mental and physical) for the LAPD, Patchett's love affair with opera, and the story of her long path to a happy marriage.

Ann Patchett is always a good idea. This book was a complete joy. I loved the essays, loved their language, loved their brevity, loved how they can live separately but loved how together they showed a complete portrait. What a genius this author is, and I fell very hard for this book.

Goodness Patchett is such a talented writer. Like so many people who read her books, I'm both impressed by her prowess but also find her such an approachable, likable person. I told someone the other day that reading her works is like curling up under a blanket, which might sound like her writing is fluffy but it's not. It's comforting and good for the soul. This collection of short stories is fantastic, plain and simple.

A pleasant compilation of Patchett's essays. I love her writing. These essays are like sitting down with an old friend.

I haven't read a book of non fiction short stories in awhile. The first few stories are about writing but the following stories cover a wide range of subjects after that. The writing is so lovely and the fact that the audio book is read by the author just makes it better. Some real nuggets of life wisdom and wonderful perspective in these stories.

I could read (listen to) Ann Patchett's nonfiction all day long. I highly recommend this collection in any format.
