Three stars seems too harsh, but four too generous. This is a very interesting book, very consciously trying to be an epic. Huge sections of the book are taken up with the family history of the main character, and very little is actually devoted to his own life. Almost no time is devoted to the period after he finds out he is male, in spite of being raised female. Kinda misses the point, don't you think?

Overall, I enjoyed this book. The story itself was well written. I was disappointed in the ending, however, and wished it continued on just a little bit more.
I was not impressed with the narrator of the audiobook version. His supposed Detroit accents sounded more New York to me. I've lived in Detroit, and my family still does. I don't think I've ever heard a native Detroiter speak with such an accent!
