It started VERY slow. I thought, quite honestly, that I was going to have to put it down. Then, later I really got into it.

the pacing felt off; lots spent on things that I wasn't interested in, and not enough on parts that were more interesting to me. the lengthy introduction of characters (prior to the point at which they meet) was dull and felt tedious. the prose was often awkward or imprecise, though I'll put that down to translation (which is a BIG pass in my estimation). it often felt as though the author didn't have complete control of the story, which, again, could be a byproduct of extraneous language stemmi ...more

Book was due back to the library when I'd only read the first 100 pages... and I don't think I care enough about what happens to buy it or go back on the wait list. If someone wants to explain what the big deal is, I'd be happy to reconsider! ...more

Well, Sweden is obsessed with coffeepots. That word had to have appeared more than any reference to a weird Swedish town/road/city/main character names. Coffeepot! Coffeepot! Coffeepot! Coffeepot! And really? You can just bone ladies and walk away? And everyone is cool? Like the coffeepot? That you reheated? I love the cover of this book. I would like to take out all references to anything but Swedish stuff and coffeepots. That somehow go on the stove. No coffee machines? Coffeepot coffeepot cof ...more

I always discount books that get a lot of hype and so I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Also, I happen to love the combination of mystery and character development. That said, it is clearly a pulp novel--not the greatest work of recent fiction to be translated into English.
