Ah, Emma. I'd put off reading this book for so long, because I figured having seen Clueless a zillion & one times (not to mention the Gwyneth Paltrow/Toni Colette version), I easily knew the story. Well, of course I was dead wrong! I knew the basics, but the book itself is so much more - as per usual. There were more characters, more intricacies; there was more of a story. I enjoyed this book much more this time around. Emma's world of landed consequence and tedium feels more real to me at this age, for some reason. It's easy to identify with her self-importance and somewhat lazy turn of mind, and yet she is capable of learning and of real kindness. I wish I had my own Mr. Knightley to help me.

I know this is blasphemy and all, but ... ready? .... I've never liked Jane Austen. Yeah, I know what you're thinking. I read a few of her books back when I was in college - can't even remember which, the ones that have all the words starting with Ps, and I just didn't love them.
