Powerful coming of age story. The novel follows Kenya from her childhood in Philadelphia until she is college aged. Solomon's prose is clear, insightful, and empathetic. The novel opens with Kenya as a young child living in Philadelphia with her parents, Sheila and Johnbrown. Shelia supports the family as a librarian and Johnbrown works odd jobs from time to time but spends most of his energy on writing "The Key" a work of black philosophy and history.
