This is a beautiful book that spoke to me deeply. I am currently at work on a dissertation that makes use of asylum records and found that Hunter conjured the sense of being pleasantly haunted by the past in beautiful, moving prose. The book also captures some of the magic of archival work, tedious though it can be.
