I don't think I did this wonderful book justice. Each of these stories is a jewel to be savored and contemplated. Plowing through the whole book was not the way to go. And yet each piece remains in my mind in a unique way: the returning soldier who is a hero and possibly a criminal; the people fed drugs to make them love, and not love, and kill; the dying man who tries his hardest to commit suicide; the family re-designing their front lawn to keep up with the "Joneses." The plight of erroneous do-gooders echo throughout Saunders short story collection. From the first story to the last, we are presented with the unlikeliest of heroes jumping to the rescue. In most cases, those efforts are not so welcome.
