So I wasn't sure if things had changed but ultimately I think short stories are not for me. And in audio form they are even worse. The lack of closure I tend to feel with a short story is only heightened when the same narrator jumps into the next story without even pausing and it takes me a few minutes to realize we've even switched! A great collection with perhaps a bit more variety and humanity than the only other previous Saunders collection I've read (In Persuasion Nation). The classic Saunders tics and tricks feel less apparent, more organic, less showy. There is still a wonderful and blistering Saunders-parody-story out there to be written; I will let you all know, dear Goodreads friends, if I end up being the person to do it. Most of this was interesting but depressing. The last story was brilliant. I remember reading one of these in the New Yorker and being blown away. I'm not sure as a package it's perfection, and gosh is it a bleak world in these pages. But it is so smart. ...more
