What Members Thought

4.5 stars. This book certainly is a must-read. It's far darker and complex than many dystopian books I've read, ranging from existentialism to the nature of authoritarianism. Pleased that I finally got the chance to read this classic.

I read this in high school and reread it now, ten years later. I got a lot out of it the second time around. Here is what stood out: the private gestures now outlawed, the protective gesture of a mother to her child becoming a political act, the disorienting effect of records and memories being altered, awash in the drift of the present.

My rating is based on my experience of the book which felt so oppressive that at times I had to flip through. Which is a shame because the contribution of it the book deserves more than 3 stars. That said it is incredibly revealing and very much an important read. I just don’t think I could stomach reading it again.
