I read this in high school and reread it now, ten years later. I got a lot out of it the second time around. Here is what stood out: the private gestures now outlawed, the protective gesture of a mother to her child becoming a political act, the disorienting effect of records and memories being altered, awash in the drift of the present.

What can you say about 1984 that hasn't been said? I think you love it or you don't. I did. And I love the Eurythmics soundtrack to the movie even more.

I read this at a young age, in one solid sitting, and had to sit and digest it for several hours afterwords. One of those books that really sticks with you.
