What Members Thought

One of the most depressing books that I've ever read so far. The fact that Orwell wrote this in early 50s and could quite predict the future made this book even more chilling. Surveillance, doctrines, propaganda, totalitarian, are some of the issues that Orwell wrote in 1984 and felt very familiar with our current world. The ending of this book is also so bleak, so it's not recommended for people who live in utopia :p

4.5 stars. This book certainly is a must-read. It's far darker and complex than many dystopian books I've read, ranging from existentialism to the nature of authoritarianism. Pleased that I finally got the chance to read this classic.

My rating is based on my experience of the book which felt so oppressive that at times I had to flip through. Which is a shame because the contribution of it the book deserves more than 3 stars. That said it is incredibly revealing and very much an important read. I just don’t think I could stomach reading it again.

I can see why I never read this before. I'm glad it is done. I guess I'm a "better" person for having done it. I won't be highly recommending it to kids though.
