Heinlein's classic (and now VERY outdated) novel about a human/Martian on earth who becomes a sort of Messiah/prophet to the people and creates a church full of free love. It was way over the top for me, especially reading it so many years after it was written. But it also had some intriguing things to say about religion and behavior.
I read somewhere about the book's origins: Apparently, Heinlein was intrigued with the idea of a Jungle Book type story but with a science fiction setting.

Stranger in a Strange Land (the uncut edition) is one my brother's all-time favorite sci-fi books, and he's been telling me to read it for some time. I enjoyed the book, though it wasn't at all what I expected it to be. I can appreciate it for being well ahead of its time in so many regards, and provocative even, but at the end of the day I had a hard time sitting down and reading it for long periods of time. I don't think i'll ever finish this. There's blatant sexism, and not in the historical, Mad Men way, but in the actually sexist 1960s way. I don't care about a single person in this book and the Martian talk is getting annoying. You grok me?
