I really enjoyed this book - it had that great Gothic sensibility to it, all dark and "oh woe is me" delicate heroine. My only complaint is that once the story was over, it dragged on with pages of "I bet you're wondering what happened to x minor character!". Actually, no, I wasn't it. The story is over, I'm done. But that's a small quibble, when the rest of the book was just delicious.

Highly readable, clever modern Gothic novel - Setterfield's first, amazingly! Looking forward to her next. I've heard people dismiss her for "thinking she's writing Jane Eyre," but I found the author's tone to be quite light, as when the doctor diagnoses Margaret with being too overwrought by romantic novels and prescribes her ten pages of Arthur Conan Doyle per night - Setterfield knows the book is a melodrama and she's enjoying it; so should we.

I read this book for a book club. When it was chosen, we thought it would be a good book to read for an immediately post-Halloween meeting. Our club met on Friday and this book was universally enjoyed. From my perspective, I thought Setterfield nailed the mood and tempo of the Gothic novel.
In brief, if you are a fan of Jane Eyre, read this book. I thoroughly enjoyed the mix of modern and Gothic and will perhaps re-read some of the books that inspired Setterfield to write this one.

This book grabbed me from the first chapter, and made it very difficult to put down at night. I read until late last night, and found myself turning over parts of the story in my dreams, worrying the loose ends of the story that I hadn't finished yet.
I especially enjoy the links to Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights -- and love the gothic overtones in the story. It's a fascinating read and a great book to lose yourself into. ...more

One of the best novels I've read in a long time. The writing and language was seductive, but not, as in many cases, at the expense of the plot. The book is haunting.
