This was really good, which sort of surprised me based on the way the premise was written on the back. It's a novel of the future - a future in which the world has "contracted" and we're no longer flying across the ocean and driving cars around. The technology still abounds, but computers are treadle-powered and much everything is is powered by "kink springs," which some physical being (be it human or animal) has to first load up with power.
