This is not meant to be a review, these are passages I'm saving just for me, for when I need them. (I've already read entire book twice (it's only 70-some pages) and I've cried both times. I needed to read a book of poetry for the 2016 Popsugar Ultimate Reading Challenge, and I decided to read a modern poet that I had not read before. When I saw Mary Oliver had a book of poems about dogs, that became the clear choice for me. I long ago heard Mary Oliver recite one of her Percy poems on NPR—it was delightful. This collection will please the devoted dog lover; and even those who have never had one as a home companion will appreciate the poet's tribute to the wild and loyal souls of dogs. ...more

Dog Songs was a very enjoyable collection of poetry. There were a couple of essays thrown in as well. I have not been a big fan of poetry in general because I find it hard to get more from the words than what is there at face value. So I thought I would try this collection since I really like animals and it might be easier to get. I was right. I didn’t have much difficulty getting the author’s meaning on many of the works.
