I'm not sure how to rate this book, or even what to think about it. It is REALLY well done. The art is simple and vivid, so vivid and evocative that even with simple art, I feel like I'm there with the author during her childhood and early adulthood. This is both good and bad--fascinating and yet terrible because of the events happening in Iran during her life, but also slightly offputting because of the author herself. I enjoyed this and I'm glad I finally had an impetus to read it. This is the story of parts of the author's childhood & young adulthood, spent in Iran and then abroad in Europe. It's interesting to see her grow up and struggle with her identity -- she's clearly torn between her more traditional Iranian upbringing, tempered by her parents' liberalism, and the more relaxed Western attitudes. As important as Maus.

A really important inside look at what kid is like in Iran as it changed into an Islamic Republic. Of course this is one woman's experience, but she shows us the hope of her parents for an open society and how that's not what revolution brought. She showed us how it became impossible for her to stay and there are also glimpses of how the western world has never understood the Middle East and continues to have a lack of understanding but not a lack of involvement.
