This was a good book! It was kind of freaky, which was great. And it was unsettling, which was also great--especially for the genre. The most hilarious part about reading this was that I didn't realize it was YA for a long time, and I kept thinking, I wonder why this isn't YA? Then, I looked at the book jacket, and realized it was. Ha! The characters were fun and had unique abilities, the plot was interesting and I kept wanting to know what would happen next. I think it will hit it's stride in b ...more

It's pretty rare that I don't finish a book once I start it, but this is a perfect example of using a design gimmick to popularize a mediocre piece of work. The story is just meh, the characters are boring, and the pictures do nothing to advance the plot. It got to the point where I cringed every single time the main character said "I remembered him/her from a photo," then described the photo to be shown on the next page. This could have been really cool - the photos are genuinely weird and cree ...more

I would give this book 3.5 stars if I could. If it had kept up the awesomeness of the first half, it would have been a 5 star book. The set up was soooooo good. But then it stopped being a ghost story and turned into something else completely and I lost interest. And there will undoubtedly be many more, as the author spent the last 50 pages setting up the sequel. Le sigh.

More like 2.5 stars. I thought it was kind of disappointing - I really liked the concept but I think the author could have gone a lot further with it. I also found the writing itself kind of weak. It also irritated me how utterly dense the main character was - I'm not usually one who figures out the mystery before the end of the book, but I felt like I was five steps ahead of Jacob throughout most of the book.

Ug, I had such high hopes for this book based on the great title and cover but I guess the old saying goes both ways. So bored. Did not pay off. The plot was mundane compared to what I imagined it could be.

I love how this story relates to using found photos as inspiration for creative writing! The result is a fun fantasy read with some creepy characters and haunting images.
