Review in brief: A paradigm-shifting look at how we view American history but through the lens of indigenous peoples and what we can do to help make it right. It’s a tough read and I would have liked it to be longer, or delved into why indigenous peoples abstained from retaliation or stooping to the total war like their opponents. The first 3/4 of this book are just...hard to read. Because the history of North America, once the Europeans showed up, is basically genocide and ethnic cleansing. Those are the words Dunbar-Ortiz uses, repeatedly, and she is right. The history and the objectives are quite clear. We just don't normally use those words, those descriptions, in "polite" (read: settler, read: colonial) society.
