I went into this knowing the characters were all unlikeable, but I think I was expecting them to have more nuance and to find something to appreciate about them that I just didn’t get. Except the dog, who was cool. There were definitely things I liked about the book - the premise was great old Stephen King style, the twists were good, I love weird powers - but it felt unfinished at the end, like half a book, not just the start of a series. If I heard that a movie adaptation was in the works, my reaction would be, "cool, I'd watch that!" rather than "Hollywood, keep your vile hands off my precious."

Which is to say: I liked this (especially the last few chapters), but didn't love it. ...more
