I am a teeeeensy bit conflicted about my rating. Because this was GOOOOOD. So. Good.
And also so dark. There are no heroes. I had to laugh when, halfway through, I went looking for book 2 and realized the series is called "Villains" because...yes. All villains, at various points on the spectrum of villainy. Nobody here is "lovable" villain, someon who does questionable things but for "good" reasons. Nope. Victor and Eli are college roommates, working on their senior thesis projects. Eli has a wild theory -- near death experiences can create ExtraOrdinaries, or people with supernatural abilities. Victor has an even wilder plan -- use themselves as test subjects. At first it looks like things have gone right, but then they very quickly go wrong. I really like the idea of this book. I like the story-line, and I like the writing style. For me though, everything remained superficial. I couldn't connect or engage with the characters, which may be part of the author's plan considering the themes, but it made it very difficult to want to finish the book. And that made me angry, because I really wanted to love this book!
