Hrm. I'm not sure how I feel about this story. I picked it up after tearing through the first two installments of A Darker Shade of Magic, and the comparison isn't terribly kind.
This is a first novel (or more accurately, first adult novel), and you can feel it. The odd set-up of current-time flashing back 10 years for a huge chunk of the book, and then flashing forward again-- well, the problem is that you loose the characters with all this structure.

I really like the idea of this book. I like the story-line, and I like the writing style. For me though, everything remained superficial. I couldn't connect or engage with the characters, which may be part of the author's plan considering the themes, but it made it very difficult to want to finish the book. And that made me angry, because I really wanted to love this book!
