I read this in a book group back in the 90s. I was the youngest person in the group and the only one who liked this book ... all the other women thought it was 'weird,' 'hard to understand' and 'depressing.' As I recall, I didn't stay in that book group very long, and this is the only book I remember reading from it, but it definitely left an impression with its elegiac, collective narrator and the dissonance of the cheesy 70s pop-culture references and the dark family drama. Meh. I did not connect with any of the characters, and ended up skimming over endless descriptions of ordinary and mundane details. The narrator wasn't even compelling. This story never hit its mark.
