The brilliance of Middlesex makes a lot more sense with this book as a backdrop.
I didn't actually love this book. But I found it inventive, chilling, and intensely and disturbingly hilarious. I can see why it is so universally acclaimed, though I think that it works best on the fairly literal level and less so when it becomes allegorical.
Eugenides is smart even when his characters are smarmy. If you've somehow missed this and read Middlesex- be sure to pick this up. And if you're new to the auth ...more
