I spent much of this book wincing at the assumptions and racism present in the situations the characters were enmeshed in. That sort of awkwardness and discomfort can be extremely appealing when much of our world is sugar-coated and pc-ified. For a first novel, I thought the author did an excellent job of having a main character who grew up, but not so much that I was disbelieving of everything she said and thought.
