I don't know whether this was an actual adult novel (as promoted) or a novel for young people (though perhaps not quite as young as The Graveyard Book), but I think it is my favorite of his books.
A middle aged man (who I thought at first was quite old, actually, then realized was probably only around 50) has returned to his hometown for a funeral, and wanders until he comes to his childhood home and the important house at the end of the lane. A bit odd, but at the end I was blown away by all the layers of reality/unreality/perception and how it translated. Giving Tree meets Life of Pi ending meets Dr. Who (thank you, MB - you were exactly right - it would have made a great Dr. Who episode).
