I finally got around to reading this by checking it out as a library ebook on my nook. I have to be honest - I wasn't expecting much - when something is soooo popular I tend to have pretty low expectations. ;)

I approached this book cautiously, expecting it to maybe be a little too self-involved, a little too annoying, a little too peace-love-earth for me. But after about 50 pages, my walls came down and I just lost myself in it. Much of the criticism of this book, I think, comes out of jealousy or cynicism. I mean, this woman got her spiritual journey paid for by a book advance! But I appreciated how she was honest about that, told the reader up front, and then moved on and never dwelt on how awesome

This was an interesting read--quick and enjoyable. I especially enjoyed the Italy section. The India section dragged a bit for me, but then Indonesia picked back up.
I liked the short chapters. Good for a mom on the go. I could read a chapter or two at the pool or before bed and not feel like I had to make a big commitment.
As for content, well-written, often amusing, sometimes tiresome--like any memoir, I guess. I tired of the descriptions of the endless meditation in India and of the sense this ...more

Once I got over E. Gilbert's bravado, I appreciated her journey and exquisitely written log of personal growth. Vicariously through her experiences, I became enamored with Italy (again), found balance in India, and regained hope in humanity in Bali.
