What Members Thought

I was deeply disappointed by this book.
I thought Dave Eggers was the darling of the literary world (he's been nominated for both the Pulitzer and the National Booker award, after all), so I expected The Circle to be a well-written but dull story of how a universally-adopted modern convenience is actually evil. (Soylent Green, anyone?) Instead, what I found was a poorly written and dull story of how a universally-adopted modern convenience is actually evil. I am so confused. I'm almost as confuse ...more

It was a bit simplistic, and Mae's character was very passive, but overall I really enjoyed the implications of surveillance in our lives. Very creepy mob feel.

Wow. I feel that even opening up this window and writing a review at all is a betrayal of the spirit of the novel. Let's just say that this was a heart-pounding novel full of what-ifs about tech companies that start out with grand intentions of making the internet/world a better place, but make you wonder if they're forgetting to not be evil. I don't think I can let you have a virtual experience of this- just read the book yourself. I'll be here catching my breath.

The trouble with satire, of course, is that it bypasses nuance in favor of Making A Point. And Eggers really, really wants to make sure his readers understand how much today's technology has him worried. Fair enough. Subtle it ain't, but at least it's thought-provoking.

This book was creepy and unnerving, which I know was the point. It wasn't particularly well written and felt like it didn't care that it was trying to hit you over the head with the points it was trying to make.

Smart and discerning people love to hate Dave Eggers. I thought the Circle had a pretty slow start, but I couldn't stop reading it even though it was totally predictable. Thanks to Eggers for writing the first book that held my attention long enough for me to complete since I became a working mom 4 months ago!
